About the Initiative
Launched in 2025, Capstone’s Driver’s Education for High Schools Initiative aims to introduce structured driver’s education into Belize’s secondary school system, helping students develop essential road safety knowledge and driving skills before they begin driving independently. Inspired by established driver’s education programs in other countries, the initiative focuses on students in their final year of high school, when many are approaching or reaching the legal age to learn to drive. The program was initially introduced in southern Belize, with three participating institutions: Toledo Community College, Independence High School, and Julian Cho Technical High School.
At Toledo Community College, 65 Fourth Year students were granted access to Capstone’s online Driver’s Education modules, covering essential topics such as traffic laws and regulations, vehicle operation and control, defensive driving, and driver attitude and responsibility. Approximately 25 students also participated in hands-on practical training, delivered across four sessions. During these sessions, students were introduced to important aspects of vehicle safety and operation, including conducting pre-drive vehicle inspections, checking engine fluids and vehicle lights, performing basic vehicle maneuvers, and applying defensive driving principles. Students also received guidance on navigating the learner’s permit application process, helping them better understand the requirements and responsibilities associated with becoming licensed drivers.
Beyond teaching students how to operate a vehicle, the initiative seeks to instill a lifelong culture of road safety, responsibility, and respect for other road users. By introducing driver’s education at the high school level, Capstone hopes to encourage safer driving habits from an early age, reduce preventable road accidents, and contribute to a new generation of informed and responsible Belizean motorists. The long-term vision is to expand the initiative to additional high schools across Belize, making structured driver’s education an accessible and valuable part of students’ preparation for adulthood.
